What I found is that the ignition always completes the 12v circuit in the “off” position (the wire associated with the plus). However, when in the “on” position, all wires complete the 12v circuit except one diagonal which directly forms the positive.
This is completely backwards of what I want. I want to complete the 12v circuit in the “on” position and close it in the “off” position.

In the off position, your ignition switch simply acts as a kill switch. It sends a ground signal to the ignition coil to kill the spark and shut down the engine.
The other 2 wires in your ignition switch are positive voltage circuits and they only work to energize the starter solenoid when you turn the key all the way to the right (start/crank).
Use your multimeter to check for possible function of the 2 solder balls (with no wires connected) on the back of your ignition switch. You can only find 2 completely separated, the circuit is not using your switch. (Also check that they are still isolated from your other 3-wire switch terminals) Because if you find they only have continuity with each other in the on position, you may be able to solder wires to them to power a light (or whatever also) to do. on and off with the key…
The bigger question for me is… now that the problem has been defined… why not just disconnect one of the power wires with a switch?
