Honda Gx160 Electric Start Wiring Diagram – Ok, I decided to use the multimeter today to see if I can get it. What I found was that the ignition always forms a 12V circuit in the “off” position (any wire with positive). However, in the “on” position, all wires form a 12v circuit, except for one diagonal straight from positive.
It’s the exact opposite of what I want. I want to complete a 12v circuit in the “on” position, and close it in the “off” position.

In the off position, the ignition switch acts as a kill switch. It sends that ground signal to the ignition coil to turn off the spark and turn off the engine.
The other 2 wires to your ignition switch are positive voltage circuits and their only function is to activate the starter magneto when you turn the key to the right (start/crank) position.
Use a multimeter to check that the 2 small solder joints on the back of the ignition switch (without wires) are working. You may discover that the 2 is a completely separate and unused circuit in your switch. (Also check that your other 3 wires are isolated from the switch connections) If you see that they only have continuity with each other in the on position, you can probably solder wires to them to turn the lights (or whatever) on and off. with key…
The biggest question for me is… now that the problem is defined… why not break one of the hot wires with a switch?

I am installing the Bam gas tank with transmitter and gas gauge on my mini buggy. It would be nice if the meter only takes power when the engine is on without having to use a rocker switch.

Did you get my suggestion to test the 2 unused terminals on your ignition switch? I have a feeling they might work well to turn your fuel gauge on/off with the key, but you’ll have to test them first to see if my guess is correct or not. If they work the way I think they do, you just hot melt one wire to the battery and then solder a wire to the other to power your fuel gauge.

But I think I understand now that you are saying to connect a positive to some unused spot or the other and test it. Right?
Tomorrow I will connect a 5 pin relay, something I should have thought of yesterday

You can install an ignition switch made for old outboards. They have a Magneto terminal to shut off the spark, which snaps into the off position, and an auxiliary terminal that will power your meter without the need for a relay… You need to find one that also has an output terminal, lots of older outboards. it had a separate push button switch.

Now that I have it visually mapped, I can see what you mean. This solves the problem, but when the ignition switch is off, the coil will always be charged, which really defeats the purpose.
I’m convinced it can’t be done without installing a new ignition switch and knowing how to wire it.

The Magneto terminal of the switch will connect to your engine. Its only function will be to land in the off position to extinguish the spark.
