Each motor has a wiring system. All of them, bar none. Without a wiring system there is no light. No lighting at all. No charging system, no turn signals, no brake lights, no nuthin’.
From here the sky is the limit. The problem can be almost insurmountable. However, if we want all the fun things we put on our motorcycles to work, what is basically a combination of many different wiring systems must. To crack in this tangle of wires we must remember that each system is individual.
Although these Wiring Diagrams can be confusing there is a method to the madness. Of course, there may be several methods to the madness, so to speak. Some have drawn the wires in the appropriate color. Some have an original color ID on each wire such as G for green or Br for brown and the like. Others have…, well you get the idea. Fortunately, things have improved over the years. I remember back in 1972 working on an Austin-Healey Sprite sports car, which I’m told is the same as an MG Midget sports car, while I was in the army. It looks to me like it was a 1965 or 66 model. All the wires were one color, white. It was hard for me to believe but it was true. I had to cut into the bundle of wires and separate and test each wire until I finally found the fault. So today’s wiring is fine. Here are some wiring diagrams so you can see what I mean.

Sometimes, Motorcycle Manufacturers help us with this by separating the wiring for major systems making it easier to find out when a problem arises. Below is the wiring for a Triumph Rocket III. Auxiliary and accessory circuit diagram, starter and charging circuit diagram, lighting circuit diagram and complete system circuit diagram.
So something is not working and we have a Wiring Diagram. Now what? First, visually inspect everything. If everything looks good, pull out your wiring diagram and figure out which color wires you need to test. If the turn signals don’t work and the lights do, you don’t need to test the lights. Start at the offending turn signals and figure out which color wires go to them. Look for the hot wire that goes to the turn signals. Then follow that color of wire back to the battery. Now we start the test.
I like to start right from the power source, the battery. With a fully charged battery and a Circuit Light Tester or Ohm Meter, find the voltage (6 or 12 volts) from the battery to the first connection. If there is no voltage at that first connection, follow the wire back to the battery, looking for broken or broken wires. If voltage is present, go to the next powered connector or device/terminal. If there is voltage going to the device and the device ground is good but the device is not working…well DUH, replace/test the device.
Usually, not always, just usually, the hot wire from the battery is the red one. This hot wire can run all over the motorcycle with other different colored wires going from the hot wire to the Terminal/Power tool. That’s why there are so many colors of wire. Each Power Terminal (such as a fuse block) or device (such as turn signals, lights, voltage regulator, etc.) has its own combination of colored wires. Also, remember that power goes through the end device and then to the ground. All this is not so difficult with your Wiring Diagram leading the way.

What are you saying? Is your motorcycle a dirt bike and no battery? Not to worry. You cannot use a Circuit Light Tester but you can use an Ohm Meter. If you use the Ohm Meter you will put a very low voltage charge through the wire and measure the resistance of that low voltage charge passing through the wire. If there is no break in the wire it is called Continuity which means there is no resistance in the wire. Ohm Meter reading will be very low. If there is a break in the wire there is no continuity, meaning the resistance through the wire is very high or infinite.
Also remember that although the source coils under the flywheel provide power to the electrical system, they only work when the flywheel is turning. You may need to remove them from the electrical system to test the rest of the wiring in the system. Check your shop manual. You have one, right?
Wires don’t wear like a valve or piston ring. If there is no physical damage, such as an accident or brief reheating of the wire and melting of the wire coating, the wire will work forever. The problems come when the wire corrodes at the ends where the wires close into something. Sometimes, you just need to unplug the connection and reconnect. Other times you need to scrape and sand and maybe even replace the offending connector. Of course, if the wire melts you have to replace it. Don’t forget to check and clean the connection ground. It can also be damaged and not provide a good ground path.
Here are some other things to consider when playing with the wiring on our motorcycles. The gauge (size) of our wires is important. Do not replace wires with smaller gauge wire. It tends to heat up and blow fuses. Larger gauge wire is fine but smaller gauge wire is never. If a fuse continues to blow, do not install a larger fuse than is called for in your Shop Manual. The wires can overheat before the fuse blows and start a fire on your beloved motorcycle. Find out why the stock fuse is blowing. Did you add too many extra lights or hand held heaters? Did you weld anything on your frame? Sometimes the wires are threaded inside the frame tubes.
