Electric Bike Battery Wiring Diagram – Will it work if connected like this? Planning to use 12s 12p 3.7v 5000mah for 48v 60ah total, is that all I need to do?
I broke the @George S thread for this video link. Thanks George if that helps! It takes a lot of effort to make a durable e-bike battery. Slow motion playback will help.
Electric Bike Battery Wiring Diagram
This diagram shows 24 batteries wired together to form an 8 volt battery. Not sure if you’ve figured it out yet.
Golden Motor Wiring Diagrams
In general, 18650 batteries place one cell in parallel with the others to form a nominal 4.1 volt group. Then they connect in series as many groups as needed. Let’s say you have 4 cells in parallel. This is 4P. Then if you put 10 of them in series to make a 36v battery then it is 10S4P. Your configuration of 12 parallel and 12 series is 12S12P. I don’t know if you get 60 AH from it. This will require 5 AH per cell.
This sketch shows the general idea, showing 3 cells in a parallel group and a battery management system (BMS) board. The BMS monitors the voltage in each parallel group.

What i think in my opinion you won’t get close to 5000mH unless you run a small LED flashlight for 100 hours. The car will vacuum it up quickly. Also for $1.40 per battery you are buying trouble and possible fire on the road as it wasn’t designed for high currents. They are for flashes. The quality of bicycle cells is much more expensive.

From a thread on an infinite sphere. Want it in your garage? Not me. Click to expand… I live in a trailer park so no garages, all work is done inside but I appreciate the knowledge. Can you provide a link to 18650 batteries that can handle more current and how can I find out which ones do and which don’t so I don’t set the house on fire
If this is your first battery you can practice with a 48V 8Ah battery, 18650 spot welding is an art form – which I’m not good at – my first battery had problems all the time and I just didn’t think specialist work was something I wanted to do learn.

The terminal is positive and negative, and the third is the gray wire that goes to the car.

I connected the 36v battery and the bike seems to run fine, but I’m trying to figure out what the third wire is for.
Does anyone have this model year ebike and can tell me what the voltage comes out of the battery at this terminal (if any).
Having fun looking for a spare battery… I bought an ebike without one.
It appears to be the wire the battery uses to send data to the motor (like batt% etc).

Interestingly, it works even without a connection. I expected that without this data it wouldn’t even start the car.
Have you ridden your bike with a non-proprietary 36v battery? As I understand it, the data wire (gray) provides two-way communication between the battery and the motor. Without the battery sending data to the motor controller, the motor should not run, and without the motor sending data back to its own battery, the battery will not provide enough current to start the motor. If you ever get your own battery, do not use a multimeter to probe between the battery positive terminal and the battery data port as this will damage the battery as reported by some who have done so. A pedelec group in Germany has designed an electronic device that sends data to the car’s controller and tricks it into working with a standard battery. I actually made an arduino clone based on their original blueprints but never used it due to reported bugs. They have since updated the design, but this is beyond what I would try to do. Instead, I bought a second proprietary battery for my yamaha pw-se.

He indicated that Giant’s 5-pin batteries use the CAN bus. The OP has a 3 pin motor. The OP said his generic 36v battery works fine but it doesn’t seem possible, not sure what exactly he meant.

Yes, I connected the 36 volt battery and drove around. Everything worked, power assist, screen, battery indicator, power, etc.
Looks like it’s all set but not sure how that could happen with this motor and regular battery – please update this thread if anything changes.
I’m still holding off on buying a replacement battery, even one where I could replace the cells…. I’m also trying to find out if a newer generation battery (6 terminals) can be used, but I suspect it’s too “smart”. I have a 6-pin connector that I can convert to an ebike. In the meantime, I’m going to get a battery to replace the hack I made. Thank you!
